I am setting up a new business, The Independent Buying Group, to help small and medium sized businesses to find the suppliers that they need to help their business work & grow - i.e. suppliers who do what they promise, on time and at a fair price.
I’ve worked in procurement for 25+ years and have seen the benefits of having the right supplier, who can do what you need. I’ve also seen it all go wrong!
Recently, as I’ve been investigating my business idea, our local garage owner said he was having loads of problems with his card payment provider, and they wanted him to sign up to a new contract.
Too busy to deal with it he asked if I could help.
After we spent loads of time on calls to their (multiple) “help” desks, we finally got all his problems sorted. But it was painful and took hours.
They wanted him to agree to a new four-year contract.
I thought I’d check out the rates they were offering, so I phoned a few other suppliers.
Without much negotiation, I managed to save him 65% - with his current provider!
They had been charging him these fees for 15 years, and wanted to lock him in for another 4.
We were both shocked and furious.
I spoke to a few of the other providers about what they would offer if I brought them 50, 100, 200, or more suppliers.
It was all great news:
Lower transaction fees
Better service - one promised a dedicated account manager, accessible by their mobile number - no more call centers.
